Background of the Study
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) plays a vital role in minimizing workplace injuries by providing workers with protective gear such as helmets, gloves, respirators, and safety boots. Industries such as construction, manufacturing, and healthcare rely on PPE to ensure worker safety (Abubakar & Yusuf, 2024).
In Yobe State, many workers in hazardous industries do not use PPE consistently due to lack of awareness, inadequate supply, or non-compliance with safety regulations. Research indicates that failure to use PPE increases the risk of workplace injuries, including falls, burns, chemical exposure, and respiratory illnesses (Okeke et al., 2023). This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of PPE in preventing workplace injuries in Yobe State and explore the challenges associated with its usage.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of PPE, workplace injuries remain a significant concern in Yobe State. Many workers neglect to use PPE due to discomfort, lack of enforcement, or insufficient training on its importance. Employers also fail to provide adequate protective gear, leading to increased occupational risks. This study seeks to examine the role of PPE in injury prevention and identify factors affecting its utilization in workplaces.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the effectiveness of PPE in preventing workplace injuries in Yobe State.
To identify challenges hindering the proper use of PPE in workplaces.
To recommend strategies for improving PPE compliance and workplace safety.
Research Questions
How effective is PPE in preventing workplace injuries in Yobe State?
What challenges do workers face in using PPE?
What strategies can enhance PPE compliance in workplaces?
Research Hypotheses
The use of PPE significantly reduces workplace injuries in Yobe State.
Poor enforcement of PPE regulations leads to increased workplace hazards.
Enhanced awareness and provision of PPE will improve workplace safety.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on industries where PPE is essential, such as construction, manufacturing, and healthcare in Yobe State. Limitations may include resistance from workers to disclose PPE-related concerns and limited access to company safety records.
